Statement By the Rada of The Belarusian Democratic Republic in Exile

The Rada of the Belarusian Democratic Republic (the BNR Rada) expresses its concern regarding the brutal repressions against opposition activists, political and human rights organisations, as well as journalists of the independent mass media, which have been unfolding in Belarus in the wake of the so-called presidential “elections” of 19 December, and which are currently gaining in scale. These repressions have involved not only the activists themselves but also their family members. |

BNR Rada Rejects Election Results
The Rada of the Belarusian Democratic Republic in Exile (BNR) condemns the brutal actions of the Lukashenka regime against the peaceful protest demonstration held in Minsk on 19 December. The BNR Rada calls on the West’s governments not to accept the results of the presidential election in Belarus, in so far as they were falsified, and the declared “winner” Alexander Lukashenka was constitutionally disqualified from running. |

Mort Wins 2009 Lannan Literary Award
Valzhyna Mort was born in Minsk, Belarus in 1981. Her first collection, I’m as Thin as Your Eyelashes, was published prior to her moving to the U.S. in 2005. Her first US poetry collection is Factory of Tears (Copper Canyon Press, 2008), co-translated by the husband-and-wife team of Elizabeth Oehlkers Wright and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Franz Wright. The book has been translated into Swedish and Russian. It is the first Belarusian-English poetry book ever published in the U.S. |

The prestigious Courage in Journalism Award of the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) was granted to the famous Belarusian journalist, Iryna Khalip, in New York on October 20, 2009. Khalip won the award together with Cameroonian reporter, Agnes Taile, and a journalist from Iran, Jila Baniyaghoob. |

Exhibition of Belarusian Posters Revisits Brussels
On April 24 sunny Brussels hosted the opening of the exhibition ‘Visual code of the time: post-Soviet poster art in Belarus’. It was the second presentation of this exhibition in Brussels. After the Administration Communale d’Evere and Curieus Evere, the Centre culturel Forest expressed its great interest in presenting Belarusian posters to Brussels’ public. |
